NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A Tennessee lawmaker is again
pushing legislation that would require more Tennessee small businesses to use
the E-Verify program to screen whether workers have legal immigration status to
work in the U.S. Rep. Bruce Griffey (R-Paris) has filed a series of bills over
his term in office aimed at decreasing illegal immigration to Tennessee and
addressing the issue of illegal aliens already living and working in the Volunteer
State.
“I want to make Tennessee be the very last place that illegal aliens want to come and all of bills seek to do just that,” Griffey said. “In addition, everyone should have to obey the laws equally. It is a fundamental principle and value in America.” Griffey has refiled a bill and wants businesses across the state to E-Verify a possible employee’s work eligibility. Currently, Griffey says private businesses with 50 or more employees must use E-Verify. The bill would expand this to say that private businesses with 6 or more employees, as well as all government agencies, use E-Verify confirm someone’s work eligibility.
“I want to make Tennessee be the very last place that
illegal aliens want to come and all of bills seek to do just that,” Griffey
said. “In addition, everyone should have to obey the laws equally. It is a
fundamental principle and value in America.” The bill was originally filed as HB1239
last year. It passed in the House, but the Senate did not take it up.
The new proposal will go before the House Banking &
Consumer Affairs Subcommittee on Wednesday.“This must end, and, in order to
bring it to an end, I want to curtail the ability of illegal aliens to obtain
jobs or benefits in Tennessee,” Griffey stated.
The Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement says employers who hire undocumented workers will soon face a
massive crackdown from the federal government.
Thomas Homan says he wants to remove the magnet that is drawing people
to the country illegally. He anticipates
the enforcement activities will increase up to four or five times the current
level. This means more workplace
investigations, more I-9 audits, and even more large scale raids. Homan says ICE will be using a two-pronged
attack by prosecuting the employers and then detaining and removing the illegal
workers from the sites. Access the web
